Plumbing Emergency? Follow These Steps
If there is a plumbing emergency in which water is leaking (or spraying!) all over your house, the first step is to stop the flow of water. All members of your family should know where the main water shutoff valves are located. The same goes for business owners and their employees. Usually, the main valve is located in the basement or outside in a utility box. If the leak is only coming from a pipe near a fixture, you might be able to just shut off the water for that fixture. For example, if your bathroom faucet is leaking, then you could locate the bathroom water shutoff valve. Follow the plumbing down from the fixture and you should come across the valve. Remember, rightie tightie turns off the water. Leftie loosie opens the water.
If your pipe bursts, then you are going to have a lot of water spraying out. Shut off the main water valve immediately. The water which is already in the pipe will still keep coming out. Position a bucket under the spot to prevent more water damage to your home. Then turn on the cold water to drain remaining water from the pipes. If the water is near electrical outlets or fixtures, then you will need to turn off your electricity as well. If your water heater is gas, you will need to turn this off as well to prevent overheating and bursting.
Many of the emergency plumbing calls we get are from homeowners who tried to fix a frozen pipe themselves. While it is certainly possible to thaw a frozen pipe yourself, it requires caution. Applying too much heat to a frozen pipe could create a heat spot, causing the pipe to burst open. Never use a torch on your frozen pipes. A hairdryer can be used, but keep it at a distance from the pipe and wave it back and forth so you don’t create a hot spot. Remember to keep your faucets open so the melted water can escape! Rocklin Plumbing has tools and experience to safely unfreeze pipes.
Clogs should always be treated with plunging first. You should only use drain cleaner for incomplete clogs (water drains but slowly). Putting drain cleaner on top of a complete clogs will just back up your pipes with harmful chemicals. If your clogged toilet is overflowing, put newspaper down on the floor to contain the water.
